Origins of the Club
Inter Miami was conceived in the mind of none other than David Beckham, the iconic English footballer. When Beckham joined the LA Galaxy in 2007, his contract contained an option to buy an expansion team in MLS at a discounted fee. By 2013, Beckham declared his intentions to establish this team in Miami. However, the initial years were fraught with challenges, primarily related to securing a stadium site.
Official Announcement and Branding
Fast forward to 2018, after multiple attempts at locking down a location and facing many hurdles, a breakthrough came. In January, the Miami City Commission approved the building of a soccer stadium in the city's Overtown neighbourhood. That same year, in September, the club's name, crest, and colours were revealed. The name ‘Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami’ or ‘Inter Miami CF’ signifies the international spirit of the city. The club's crest features two herons, symbolic of freedom, and a seven-sided shield, representing the seven seas.
Inaugural Season and Key Moments
2020 marked the debut of Inter Miami in MLS. Coached by Diego Alonso, the club began its journey with a series of matches against formidable teams. The first game against LAFC was an anticipated one and set the tone for the club’s ambitious approach. Though the initial matches had their share of challenges, the club showcased a resilient spirit and gained a significant following.
The club faced additional challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the entire 2020 sporting world. Matches were postponed, and the season's format was restructured. However, amidst these challenges, Inter Miami managed to reach the MLS playoffs in their debut season, a commendable achievement.
